Church history

In 1883 an association of ten ministers and ten laypersons formed a corporation under the laws of Oregon and Washington territories called “Ocean Park Camp Meeting Association of the Methodist Episcopal Church”. The 250-acre property was divided into lots and the first camp meeting was held July 26th to August 5, 1883. These meetings continued for many years.

The present church building was started in 1913 and completed in 1914. It was built by the popular subscription with J. E. Hazeltine of Portland, Oregon matching the total funds collected. The cost of the building was $3,185.00. The Ocean Park Methodist Church was dedicated on August 9, 1914, by District Superintendent Dr. S. S. Sullinger. The Ocean Park Methodist Church bell hung originally in the Oysterville Methodist Church (1871-1921). It was a gift from John Crellin. The bell was made in Philadelphia about 1874 and shipped via railroad to San Francisco then to Oysterville on a sailing schooner used in the oyster trade. The bell is inscribed, “First M. E. Church, Oysterville, 1876.” The bell was taken down in 2005 for cleaning and restoration. It was reinstalled and rededicated in August 2005.

The bell still rings every Sunday before the start of service at Ocean Park United Methodist Church.
