Can you imagine having nothing to eat from lunch Friday to breakfast Monday morning?

"Our vision is – no more hungry children."

Every child should have a dream for the future – to become a doctor, a musician or maybe a star athlete. When kids don’t have to worry about food, they can focus on learning to help those dreams come true. With your assistance, every child in our community can have a better chance to reach his or her goals. We gladly accept donations of food and money so that we can stock our pantry.

How Food4Kids Backpacks Works

This program provides “Weekend Food Backpacks” for children in Ocean Beach Schools who have been identified by their school counselors as being in need of additional food for the weekend. These children may participate in the Free/Reduced Lunch Program during the week but struggle over the weekends. Backpacks are sent home with the kids every week. On Monday the child returns the empty backpack to be restocked with food for the following weekend.

In the 2016-17 school year, Ocean Beach Schools received backpacks of quality balanced meals and healthy snacks along with milk and fresh fruit in each backpack for the weekend during the school year.

Food4Kids backpacks may include the following items: cereal, breakfast bars, oatmeal, juice, tuna kits, macaroni and cheese, peanut butter crackers, soup, apple sauce, fruit cups, ravioli, vegetables, shelf-stable milk, and other nutritious food, see our list below.

Background and History of the Program

Many families struggle to eat healthy meals and snacks every day. Food4Kids Backpacks is a free program. It is an effort by the Peninsula Community, sponsored by Long Beach Elks Lodge #1937, Ocean Park United Methodist Church, Ocean Beach Presbyterian Church, Ocean Beach School District to help children eat more healthy meals and snacks through their local schools.

The concept for a backpack club was started in 1995 by an Arkansas school nurse. Working with a local Little Rock food bank, the nurse and a group of volunteers began sending food home with needy children. After being teased for being poor, the volunteers began putting the food in backpacks to make it less conspicuous.

The Ilwaco-Long Beach Kiwanis Club Fund, beginning back in January 2011 started a Food4Kids Backpacks Program fund and began working with families in the Peninsula Community.  When the Ilwaco-Long Beach Kiwanis Club closed, club members chose to continue supporting youth activities by establishing an endowed fund with South Pacific County Community Foundation (SPCCF). A committee of those members made grant recommendations to the Foundation, and their fund will help the support children and youth programs in south Pacific County and Food4Kids Backpack Program.

Who Can Participate?

Low income families can contact their elementary school principal to find out if they qualify for the program.  Program participation will be kept as confidential as possible.
